When adding a new instrument, as instrument type, you can choose “FM” or “Sample”.

To musicians, “FM” means FM synthesis like in the Yamaha DX series of synthesizers and the AdLib soundcards (or indeed the Sega MegaDrive/Genesis).

Using the term “AY” or “YM” would perhaps be better?

For now, only AY is managed, but maybe YM will be. So I won’t use AY or YM as an instrument type. “FM” is “Frequency Modulation”, which, I believe, quite matches what the PSG is doing? I didn’t lie by say “FM Synthesis”, so there is no synthesis :).

“AY/YM” is still a better term (the traditional Spectrum/Amstrad AY chip is completely register compatible with the YM2149, and will output the exact same sound given the same input).

Obviously it’s your choice. But I will hold you responsible if we get chipmusic noobs in the Atari ST IRC channels talking about “FM sounds” on the ST 🙂

The term I first used was “PSG”, but I dismissed it because it felt too generic. I somehow feel it is better. What do you think?

Oooh, that’s a good one! In my opinion that’s the best one so far!

It was a wise decision to change it to PSG. I was wondering how you could have FM on the AY chip!
