Pitches are considered an &#8220;expression&#8221; in AT terminology, as opposed to instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a pitch?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a guitar player, you may know it as &#8220;pitch bend&#8221; or &#8220;slide&#8221;. In our case, it is also used to simulate a vibrato. A pitch is simply a slight change of frequency, a shift from one note to another. It can be musical or a special effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a upward pitch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PitchUp.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And a nice vibrato:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PitchVibrato.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But you can get crazy and do this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PitchCrazy.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The pitch list<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the left side of the screen is a list of various items, such as instruments, arpeggios, and, without surprise, pitches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"260\" height=\"176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchList.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchList.png 260w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchList-230x156.png 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Open the pitch list (<strong>PL<\/strong>) by<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>clicking on <a class=\"maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-keyboardshortcut\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\"><span class='mb-text'>shift + F5<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or clicking on the third icon of the icons to the left (as highlighted above).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The editor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The PE itself opens either by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>pressing <a class=\"maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-keyboardshortcut\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\"><span class='mb-text'>F5<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clicking on the fourth icon of the icons to the right<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or by double clicking on an item (such as &#8220;Pitch up&#8221; in the screenshot above).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"899\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchListAndItem.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchListAndItem.png 899w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchListAndItem-300x68.png 300w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchListAndItem-768x173.png 768w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchListAndItem-230x52.png 230w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchListAndItem-350x79.png 350w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchListAndItem-480x108.png 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 899px) 100vw, 899px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In this screenshot, there are 3 pitches : &#8220;Pitch up&#8221;, &#8220;Vibrato&#8221; and &#8220;Crazy&#8221;. The &#8220;None&#8221; is always present and selecting it means &#8220;no pitch&#8221;, so doesn&#8217;t really count as one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PE looks much like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/index.php\/the-instrument-editor\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instrument editor<\/a>, and even more like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/index.php\/the-arpeggio-editor\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arpeggio editor<\/a>, which both should be known to you by now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One row only is present, and is the pitch. Each value is added to the note frequency. Negative values will sound lower, positive higher. Use the &#8220;+&#8221; and &#8220;-&#8221; icons to increase the visible range of the pitch if you need more of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the top is a header:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"633\" height=\"29\" src=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchEditorHeader.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchEditorHeader.png 633w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchEditorHeader-300x14.png 300w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchEditorHeader-230x11.png 230w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchEditorHeader-350x16.png 350w, https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/pitchEditorHeader-480x22.png 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>loop start<\/em> and <em>end<\/em> indicate what part to loop. Note that contrary to instruments and just like arpeggios, pitches <strong>always<\/strong> loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>speed<\/em> goes from 0 (fastest) to 255 (slowest). And just like instruments, you can override this speed in your patterns via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/index.php\/effects#pitch-speed\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pitch Speed effect<\/a>, so that you don&#8217;t have to duplicate a pitch just because you want to change its speed occasionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Shift<\/em> is new though. It is only a convenience that allows you to add virtual &#8220;0&#8221; at the beginning of the pitch. The loop is also shifted. It is useful if you want to have your pitch to start with a little delay. You can use this parameter instead of adding empty bars by yourself. Typically, you may want a vibrato to start a bit later than the start of the note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the loop icon <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"25\" class=\"wp-image-643\" style=\"width: 25px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/instrumentEditorZoom.png\" alt=\"\"> changes the horizontal zoom of the bars, which can be useful to visualize the pitch better if it grows long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Editing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The way to edit the bars is exactly the same as for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/index.php\/the-instrument-editor#editing-the-values\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instrument editor<\/a>, that is, either via the mouse, the cursor, or by typing them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Testing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/index.php\/the-instrument-editor#playing\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instrument editor<\/a>, you can use your MIDI keyboard, the <a class=\"maxbutton-1 maxbutton maxbutton-keyboardshortcut\" href=\"javascript:void(0);\"><span class='mb-text'>QWERTY<\/span><\/a> keys of your computer keyboard, or even the piano at the bottom of the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using a pitch in a song<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you feel satisfied with a pitch, you can use it in song. As you can see in the PL on the left, each pitch has a number associated to it (1 for &#8220;Pitch up&#8221;, 2 for &#8220;Vibrato&#8221;, etc.). It is this number that you use in the pattern, thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/index.php\/effects#pitch-table\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pitch Table effect<\/a>, represented by the &#8220;p&#8221; letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By writing this little pattern (at slow tempo)&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"146\" height=\"228\" src=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PitchPv.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1507\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230; you could hear this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.julien-nevo.com\/arkostracker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Pitches.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s break it down:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The first two notes (<code>C-4 01<\/code> and <code>D-4 01<\/code>) have no effect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>E-4 01 p01<\/code> means that the pitch <code>01<\/code> is used (&#8220;Pitch up&#8221;).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><code>F-4 01<\/code> has no effect. However, pitches, just like arpeggios, start again at each note, so the latest pitch applies.
